Things to do in Puerto Rico

The Beaches in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is rightly famous for its two stunning beaches. The main beach – called Puerto Rico Beach – is handily located near to the town’s smart marina and close to the main commercial centre, where there are plenty of shops, restaurants and bars. This beach is great for a family holiday because the sands are safe for children to play on. Because of its crescent shape, it has a sheltered aspect making it ideal for sunbathing. The beach is book-ended by jetties at either side and protected by the marina’s harbour walls which mean that waves are gentle and good for paddling in.

Just down the road is Amadores Beach. This beach can be accessed quite easily from the main part of Puerto Rico and it stands in front of the part of the town which has been most recently developed. This smart beach is decked out with sun loungers and parasols. Palm trees are dotted around the soft white sands, providing a little shade, and there is a mini-golf course that has been constructed nearby that is well worth a visit.

Puerto Rico's Attractions

If you are looking for a lively night out in Puerto Rico, then there are two main hot spots to head for. The ‘Europa Centre’ has plenty of bars that sell reasonably priced drinks and there are a number of music options including karaoke and disco. Alternatively, head to the ‘Shopping Centre’ where there is also the choice of live music as wells as a wide selection of bars.

There is a diving school in the resort which is something that many holidaymakers have a go at. The tuition is suited to anyone who has tried SCUBA once or twice before or even complete novices. Organised trips into the waters are held regularly throughout the year. There are also a number of operators who ply their trade in Puerto Rico with organised day cruises which will take you around the island’s rocky coastline.

If you are looking for something that is a little more relaxed, perhaps on one of the resorts few cloudy days, then try the wellness centre at the Gloria Palace Royal. Here, there are spa facilities and different kinds of massage therapies that are on offer. The centre is centrally located in the resort and easy to find.

Getting Around the Resort

A good choice for a last minute holiday, Puerto Rico is only about half an hour’s transfer from Gran Canaria’s airport which is on the eastern side of the island. The airport is the largest in the Canary Islands. Buses, which are known locally as Guaguas and pronounced wah-wah, are the best means of public transport in Gran Canaria and relatively cheap. There are also plenty of car hire operators and many of these have offices and forecourts in Puerto Rico. Taxis are also usually in plentiful supply all over the island. Be advised, however, that there are usually supplementary tariffs that are charged by taxi drivers if you choose to travel at night, on public holidays or on a Sunday.
