The entertainment island

There are a number of interesting historical sites on Rhodes, including the acropolises at Rhodes and Lindos and the mediaeval Rhodes Old Town. Rhodes is also home to one of the largest waterparks in Europe, ‘The Water Park’ at Faliraki, the picturesque Socratous Garden in Rhodes Town and its outdoor theatre, where you can enjoy traditional Greek entertainment. For the party crowd in Faliraki, although there’s always something going on throughout the summer, when Karnage kicks off in June, the atmosphere reaches new heights and there’s non-stop dancing for as long as you can keep up.

Wildness versus serenity

The beaches of Rhodes vary between the wild beauty of the rockier outcrops on the north and west of the island, which attract windsurfers, and the sandier, more relaxed eastern coast. Daily excursions are available from Rhodes to the other islands or from one area to another, so your options remain open no matter where you stay.



There is accommodation to suit every pocket and you can choose to go all inclusive or pay for the bare minimum and buy your food as you go. This isn’t necessarily the cheap option, but it can allow you a little more freedom if you're planning a number of excursions; many people like to have a clearer idea of their expenditure before they arrive and all-inclusive deals are better for this.

Picking your resort

Different resorts suit different travellers, although, at some point you should visit Rhodes Town, one of UNESCO’s world heritage sites. The town still has its medieval appearance, including the original defensive walls; there are ample opportunities for shopping and the centrally situated beach is well-served by bars and restaurants. If you’re part of the 18-30 singles crowd, you should head to the party resort of Faliraki. With streets named ‘Bar Street’ and ‘Club Street’ it’s not hard to find your way to the all-night action. Luckily, you can relax on Faliraki’s pristine beach, enjoying a drink or two on a hired sun lounger or, if you still have the energy, there are plenty of water sports and excursions to fill your days.

If you’re more of a sporty animal than a party animal, you may want to give Ialyssos a try. It’s easy to leave the resort in better shape than when you arrive, with gyms, horse-riding centres, windsurfing, exercise classes and mountain bikes for hire. You don’t have to spend the whole time exercising though, as there are plenty of more leisurely opportunities, including the various day-trips that are a must for any visitor to the Greek Islands. At the eastern end of Rhodes' northern coast, the town of Ixia draws a high-class crowd with luxury hotels and sophisticated cultural attractions in the shape of the remains of a Byzantine monastery and a Roman Temple which sit high above the resort and provide some of the most impressive views on the island.

With a Blue Flag beach, the resort of Kiotari has a reputation for being easy-going and many package holidays are booked at this relatively new tourist centre. In recognition of the massive draw of the beach, there are bars, toilets and plenty of sun beds for hire to make the experience even better. Although the area is mostly stocked with small shops selling local produce, if you want something a little more inspiring, it’s only about twenty-five minutes from Lindos, which offers a vast range of goods in its exciting shopping centre.

For a very chilled break, it’s worth considering the diminutive former fishing-village of Pefkos. As it’s on the eastern coast of Rhodes, this relaxed resort shares the beautiful sandy beaches typical of the area and has some excellent little bars and restaurants that give the nightlife a gentler atmosphere than the more party-oriented areas. Up at the northernmost tip of Rhodes, you will find the perfect family resort, the friendly and pristine Tholos. Although it’s booming, in terms of visitor numbers, Tholos retains the charm of a little village and its beach is one of the best on the island. Clean, sandy and great for swimming and water sports, Tholos’ beach is close enough to local cafés and bars to allow you to take a break for food and not waste too much relaxation time. There’s an attractive local market and it’s a perfect spot to use as a base for visits elsewhere.

Islands in the sun

The weather is suitable for holidaying from March until November, with very little rain at either end and temperatures remaining mild during spring and autumn. However, it is during the long, hot summers from early June to late September that conditions are at their best with average temperatures in the thirties for much of the time.
