The second largest Canary Island after Tenerife, Fuerteventura is closest to the African coast and the weather is similar to that of Florida, with some colder, wet weather in winter but with dry, hot and windy summers; the wind is not too strong but is strong enough to make the heat feel more comfortable: perfect for family holidays. It features the largest number of beaches in the Canaries, with enormous dunes to the north of the island at Corralejo and flat expanses to the south. The local cuisine is varied, but as it is an island, you can expect a lot of fish dishes to be available. With a flight time of between four and four-and-a-half hours from the UK, it’s a reasonable amount of travelling time, even with small children. 

Attractions & Events 

With the great weather, beautiful beaches and warm ocean waters, it’s hardly surprising that all kinds of sports are available on Fuerteventura, from the more sedate, such as the many walking trails on the island or the numerous golf courses and extending to the much more adventurous. Unsurprisingly, water sports are popular here, with seven professional surf schools available; with equipment hire, it doesn’t matter how inexperienced you are. You can surf if you want to! Diving, of course, is a popular activity and, again, you don’t have to have dived before because there are qualified instructors to help you learn safely. You can dive into a wealth of underwater beauty in the clear ocean. If you like the water but want to take it easy, you can enjoy the sailing at a number of locations, combining it with fishing if you like to multitask. 

There are plenty of activities for landlubbers; you can see the sights from the back of a horse with a trot through the mountains or along the coastal roads, whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced horse rider or if something more mechanical appeals to you there are bike and trike tours available, too. There are several sites of cultural interest, including The Atalayita Archaeological Interpretation Centre, dedicated to explaining the geological samples from Atalayita, a volcanically formed hill in the area, and The Museum of Salt, which preserves the remains of the island’s salt manufacturing industry, which existed in ancient times.

Fuerteventura - For Families 

Fuerteventura is great for families because it takes a relatively short time to reach, the weather is sunny with a cooling wind and there are so many beautiful beaches and activities available. A particularly good family resort is the Caleta de Fuste, which features a sheltered, artificially constructed beach which avoids the stress of being in an open area with children. One hotel in this resort has a mini water park, but with a beautiful crescent-shaped bay and marina offering water sports for all ages, as well as plenty of opportunity for swimming and paddling, the island is one giant water park. There are many restaurants to suit a range of palates, but if you have opted for an all inclusive package you can rest-assured that all of the hotels cater for young British taste as this resort is particularly popular with UK holiday-makers. Even with less emphasis on nightlife, there is plenty to do with a multiplex cinema, child-friendly pubs and restaurants and, during the day, you can visit Chipmunk Mountain to see, or even feed, the chipmunk-like Barbary ground squirrels. 

Fuerteventura - For couples and single travellers

For the single traveller or couples, Corralejo is a popular resort, with a livelier nightlife than Costa Caleta, including disco-bars and nightclubs or if you want something more private and romantic there is a liitle square tucked away amongst the warren of streets; La Placita offers open-air bars and secluded restaurants and is much quieter than the main tourist area, Centro Atlantico. As on the rest of Fuertaventura there are activities, including all the usual sports so you could take a romantic horse-ride or go sailing. The beautiful beaches include some frequented by naturists. Surfing is the big attraction in Corralejo, which probably accounts for why the area has such a relaxed atmosphere.
