This is clearly in evidence in and the marina which forms the focus of the town’s social scene with its stylish bars and restaurants. From the marina, there’s a pleasant walk all the way into Torremolinos, and this route has its fair share of bars and restaurants along the way too.

If you’re looking for something a little more traditional, then head for more authentic Benalmadena Pueblo with its old style white washed buildings and little cobbled streets. Whatever preferences you have regarding food and drink, you’ll find all palates catered for here, from tapas to fish and chips, from Sangria to Guinness.

Torremolinos was once a sleepy little fishing village, and it too has had to shake off the image of a somewhat overdeveloped resort. Depending on whether you want a hectic holiday full of bars and clubs during the peak season, or a more relaxed stay out of season when the resort adopts a more Spanish and authentic feel, this place can cater to both. You may like to take a walk down the exclusively pedestrian Calle Can Miguel with its many shops and boutiques, not to mention the restaurants. The steady flow of people from all corners of the globe gives this place a vibrancy that you’ll no doubt be infected by as you peruse the shops and amble along. You may eventually reach the Cuesta del Trajo, and descend a steep flight of steps to the picturesque fishing village of El Bajondillo with its restaurants and little shops and market stalls.

Another former fishing village, Fuengirola, is now a vibrant city with 7 km of sandy beaches and with one of the best climates on the Costa. The Plaza de la Constitucion is a desirable spot for many visitors with its stylish shops and boutiques. It also is home to the Church of Nuestra Senora that was largely destroyed during the Spanish Civil War but was reconstructed in 1946. The square takes on a particularly magical quality during Christmas time with the illuminations and decorations. You may find that a spontaneous wander through the little winding streets branching off from the square takes you to some interesting places. Although the plaza has undergone some changes in recent years, it still retains its charm.

If you want to soak up some history, head for the Castle of Sohail, situated 38 m above sea level. From this historic vantage point you can enjoy some spectacular views of the Mediterranean and surrounding countryside, including the mountainside village of Mijas. Incidentally, Mijas is another gem of the Costa well worth a visit, with its brilliant whitewashed buildings, winding streets, and fragrant smells of pine forests permeating the air.

With around 300 days of sun a year and a grand stretch of beaches, Marbella is going to attract anyone who is here for the sun. Whether you want to just get a tan, have a swim in the sea, or maybe try out some water sports, this place is sure to satisfy. Of course, there is also nearby Peurto Banus, a great place for yacht spotting while you enjoy a drink or two in one of the bars situated around the marina, which really comes to life in the evening and stays that way until the early hours. Back in Marbella, you’ll find every conceivable type of entertainment, and there are enough bars and clubs to satisfy anyone. Along the sea front, the Paseo de Maritemo runs the length of the beach and offers an endless choice of restaurants from the fresh sea food variety and Spanish restaurants, to Mexican and Indian, and a whole host of stylish cocktail bars and everything in between. One great way to see the sights here is by a horse drawn carriage which will take you at a leisurely pace around the city centre. Sit and enjoy a sangria as you watch the people go by in a somewhat less hectic fashion to the frenetic main town centre.
